Enlightened

I watched most of the film last night on Sundance, and have set my DVR so I can see the whole presentation next time it airs. It was both enlightening and disgusting. I guess I will never understand the greed that motivates humans to decimate our irreplaceable environment for money. It is truly sickening! The impact the mining industry has had on the mountains in our region is staggering. I now live in southeast Tennessee, but used to live closer to the West Virginia and Kentucky borders and have seen first hand what strip mining could do to the natural beauty of the mountains. At that time, I really didn't understand the far reaching consequences of these activities. After watching "Burning The Future", I am beginning to understand the environmental impact it has on the residents, wildlife and forest. It seems like all those whose health has been detrimentally effected would have a claim similar to the people at Love Canal or Karen Silkwood. Maybe lawsuits for millions of dollars in damages might slow Massey down, maybe not. But it might also bring some well deserved attention to the plight of the local residents who need all the help they can get.

An American Shame

I too just saw the BTF film on Sundance...It needs rto be played over and over and over again. I am truly saddened by shameful exploitation by Massey. The actions of Massey go beyond criminal, an enemy of our nation would hope to do no less to American citizens than Massey has accomplished.

Sad...

I don't know how anyone could watch the documentary and not be brought to tears. I live in New York, but, it really shouldn't matter. I've been to West Virginia and thought it was the most beautiful place.
How could our Gov't allow this? Not only are they stripping the natural beauty, but, poisoning our fellow Americans. We should all remember that on the coal miners backs, we turn our lights on..run our a/c, our computers...
I will send this site to as many people as I can..I wish I could do more....

new terminology

before watching this movie, i had been under the ignorant impression that DEFORESATION is a term that relates to an Amazon envoironmental disaster. After watching Burning the Future coal in America, I realize now that the Appalacians (sic) an area i grew up in, has lost some of incredible luster thanks to the greed of the coal mining / energy consortiums!

second go around

after learning more about the extraction process these coal companies are using it brings to my mind that this is just the second go around of the trail of tears. first it was the governments purpose to remove the native people for they're land, now they are destroying the natives land but don't care if you stay or not.I'ts all in the name of greed

Greed is killig the land and us.

It is sad what is takeing place but it looks like the coal companies will not be leaving untill the coal is gone. I think they shouldn't be selling coal overseas at are expense. That would slow down their coal production at least. The EPA needs to get envolved and more plublisity is needed. Don't give up.

Clean and Renewable Electricity for Cities

I'm pursuing an initiative to have enough solar and wind installations within Beverly, MA to meet the elecricity needs of the city, and create a process that can be duplicated by other cities seeking 100% clean and renewable sources of electricity. Actions include collaborating with government, businesses and the community. Thank you for your story... what you're doing is inspiring.

Saw film for the first time

I saw this film for the first time and it is no surprise to me the terrible things that these corporations will do to make more money than they made last year and their continual quest for more profits. The companies get the undying support of our local and federal government and our people get the worse end of the deal. I can not fathom the idea of destroying something as beautiful as the area in which the film was made taking away these peoples childhood and that of their children and grandchildren as well. Once again I am disgusted by what I see.

Wanting to Help

A small group of us watching this film together, and were deeply disturbed by the fact that our own citizens can't get clean water, due to pure greed and inhumanity.
Why is so hard for people to act like a person these days?

The group of us wants to help out, though we don't know what we can do. It's a shame that some of the people in the towns have to buy their own water. We want to start up an organization that will donate bottles of clean water to the towns of West Virginia affected by coal mining.

Where can we start? Who do we contact? We want to help!

We need to contact this man!

There is a man in California who has developed a completely green energy producing technology. I have researched his product(s) and they have been confirmed by several scientists, technical advisors, economists and many others as, "THE REAL DEAL". This persons name is Jim Boswell. He has made it very clear that he developed his clean energy technology because he was sick and tired of the dirty energy production in our world and how the people were suffering economically and physically due to greedy companies and politician's. Mr. Boswell is now at the point where he has had several offers from companies to purchase licensing from him in order to manufacture his clean energy products. Mr. Boswell has made it very clear that he will be the deciding person on where these numerous manufacturing plants, (that will also be 100% completely clean as well and will create tens of thousands of jobs in each community) will be built as he wishes to offer communities who need jobs the first opportunity for these plants and the good paying jobs he can offer. Mr. Boswell's energy production inventions can easily produce enough energy to completely eliminate the need for the poisoning coal and the destructive nuclear power. If we provide the people with clean renewable energy, then the coal and nuclear groups will no longer be able to use the excuse that, "we need the power". I know Mr. Boswell is very passionate about people in need and would be genuinely interested in speaking to the people of this, and other groups who are being abused by the big corporations and the greedy politician's and prove how his energy technology will eliminate the poisons of coal and nuclear, create good paying jobs and protect the people from dirty energy. You can contact Mr. Boswell at jboswell@comcast.net and I hope he doesn't mind me giving this number out and I don't think he will since he is so passionate about helping others and making a difference in our world, but I have spoken to him at (559)432-7552.
i hope this organization contacts Mr. Boswell as he can assist you in eliminating the destruction of the coal industry while creating more jobs than the coal companies do and all the while, creating a completely clean environment.

Astonished

We saw this movie as a family on a Sunday morning and just were astonished. We drive 500 miles to West Virginia to ride our quads due to the fact we cannot ride in New Jersey because of an endangered fern and yet the people of West Virginia cannot even drink water from their faucet. It has completely opened our eyes and we would like to know how to help. Has anyone contacted Geen Peace or PITA? Our daughter has also taken this situation to school to see what they can do to help. She was crying to see that the kids had to go to school with a toxic silo next to their school. Please someone contact us to see where to send clean water and any other help we can offer. We need to work together to make sure that your word is heard and that help and change happen. This is pure greed and neglect on the part of the people of the united states. In numbers we can achieve anything.

Appalled

I just showed this video to 140 7th grade Social Studies students in the Seattle area. It has opened our eyes about the environmental impact of mountain top removal coal mining. It has also revealed to us the harsh truth about the relationships governments sometimes have with large corporations - that they are willing to sacrifice the health of their own citizens for money. We live in a beautiful state (Washington) full of mountains and forests - we cannot imagine what it would be like if they were reduced to rubble and our streams poisoned. Surely there must be a better way. I am thrilled Maria won the Goldman prize and hope this helps to get her message out.

Thanks for the Film

I just finished watching the film. I am not surprised at the way government is allowing big business to do what it wants. I don't know which has the most damage, mountain top removal of Tar Sands removal, but that doesn't matter. What matters is the planet and getting the word out and that I will help with.

You guys must need help finding truth about this topic. Fossil fuels are renewable due to them being derived from animal and plant remains. Gas emissions actually only produce .6 harmful gasses which are less dense than air. Diesel produces when under strain and contains about the same amount of similar harmful gasses. Coal only produces Co2. All these fuels produce jobs and healthy plants. This is only helping earth by creating Co2 and feeding plants the nutrients they need and is fed through the so called ozone hole. This is actually a chimney for the surplus gasses that are not used. This hole is only existing because winter at the poles freezes the ozone to the ice cap. There is always one chimney and they alternate every summer. The reason emissions cause short lifespans is left to high concentrations in a relatively small area. So if you want to live longer don't live in the city. Even suburban life is better than an apartment in the city. Don't worry yourselves, electric cars will happen and soon compact living will be perfectly fine, but we just can't afford it yet. Consider this and you'll see what I am talking about.
